WWYD? (What would you do?)

These people I know own a beach house and over this past summer a renter downloaded the movie, The Hangover illegally on their computer using the house’s wireless internet. The owners received information from a government piracy prevention fining them for illegally downloading a movie. Luckily the internet provider had a date for the download and the owners were able to track down the renters to pay the fine. It's interesting that although the renter downloaded the movie to their personal computer that the person that pays for the internet service takes the heat. Everything worked out in the end, but I guess it makes it a little awkward calling a renter asking for a couple thousand dollars for a movie…

I wonder what happens when college students use campus internet to illegally download files. Do the schools get a free pass? What would you guys do if our school billed you $3,000 for an illegally downloaded song?

  1. I never really thought about that. I know tons of people who download music illegally and I think if they realized the fine was that high they would think twice before doing it again.

  2. I really don't know what I would do. I haven't downloaded a song in real long time cause I have stopped using my Ipod, and I stream music with Grooveshark when I am on my computer so it surprisingly doesn't affect me.

  3. I actually have a friend that was busted for downloading music illegally at the University of North Dakota. He had to pay the several thousand but recieved no punishment from the school.

  4. This makes me think about places that offer free wifi, like coffee shops, how many people are around downloading music and movies and if they are able to be traced. $3,000 is a bit steep and I would hope it is a song I really liked and not something embarrassing.
